Mute Track is an installation featuring kinetic SCOBYs (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacterial Yeast), which grew over several months. They weigh between 30 and 110 kilograms and are shaped like triangles, approximately 180 cm long and 120 cm at their widest point. The SCOBYs are sewn to a webbing structure that is attached to a rotating motor and supported by a metal structure. The exhibition consists of a simple choreography. Beginning from a resting position, the motor gradually increases in speed. This takes the SCOBY from a slow circling motion into a faster rotation, stretching its fleshy form. At around 8 miles per hour, the triangular SCOBY appears to flip from front to back. After stopping, the action begins again.
The exhibitions pictured above are from 2025 and 2026 in the order: Sismógrafo in Porto, Portugal, St.Chads in London, United Kingdom and Atoi Gallery at Labayru Market in Bilbao, The Basque Country, Kohta in Helsinki, Finland (as a part of the Weathered Together exhibition with Maija Fox, guest curated by Benjamin Orlow from St.Chads)
These exhibitions were reviewed in Art Review, The Penitent Review, Umbigo, ArteCapital and Helsingin Sanomat.
